What should I do if my pet gets stung by a bee?

If your pet has been stung by a bee then the biggest thing is to monitor for an allergic reaction.  Allergic reactions can happen the first time a pet is stung but more likely when stung multiple times or have history of previous bee stings.

  1. Monitor for swelling – if the site starts to swell and it is on the face or neck we need to monitor breathing closely. If you notice the swelling is continuing to progress over the next 30 minutes or breathing changes in any way please have them checked by a veterinarian right away.
  2. If you see a stinger please remove it with tweezers to help prevent further venom and ease discomfort.
  3. Monitor for other signs of allergic reaction – if your pet starts to vomit after the bee sting, acting agitated, drooling or lethargic please get them to a veterinarian immediately.
  4. If no swelling is appreciated then call a veterinarian to see if a Benadryl dose is an appropriate next step and recommended dosage.
